The Jump Start application will reopen in the Fall of each year and new youth will be given the opportunity to get involved.
GLSEN Chapter’s Jump-Start Team is a group of student leaders (youth ages 13-18) that work to create safe schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/ expression. To achieve this goal, the team organizes educational programs and actions in the community to promote inclusion, safety, and respect for lesbian, gay,bisexual, transgender, queer and ally students.
For the upcoming year, the programming goal of the Jump-Start Team will be to act as youth leaders of the Breaking the Silence Initiative. The Breaking the Silence Initiative will target the reduction of bullying and the improvement of school climate for K - 12 students by training a core group of youth representatives to develop and implement experiential anti-bullying lessons. On top of visiting schools in person, youth will be tasked with creating a website, social media campaigns, PSAs, community art projects, and resource guides, and will also be responsible for planning various advocacy opportunities, such as monthly GSA Alliance Meetings, bi-annual LGBT Summits, Lobby Days, and parties.

Currently, the Jump Start Team is composed of 12 youth leaders divided up into 5 different committees. Youth are assigned to a committee based on their skills/interests (note: listed skills/interests are NOT requirements for selection). The different committees and their responsibilities are:
Team members are required to attend a weekend of training in November 2011, and programming will last until May 2012. This training is what enables team members to actively and effectively engage in the Breaking the Silence Initiative. - GSA Alliance Leadership: Facilitate monthly GSA Alliance of Southeast Michigan meetings. Create agendas for monthly GSA Alliance meetings. Plan small social events for GSA Alliance. Locate speakers for monthly GSA Alliance meetings. Communicate information about Days of Action (Ally Week, Day of Silence, etc) to the GSA Alliance members. Take notes at monthly meetings and post to the GSA Alliance Facebook Group. Recruit new GSA Alliance members. Send email reminders of meetings/events to GSA Alliance members. RELATED SKILLS/INTERESTS: LEADERSHIP, FACILITATION, SOCIAL EVENTS, PERSONAL NETWORKING, ORGANIZATION, SPEAKING (3 Youth, 2 Co-Facilitators & 1 Secretary)
- Presentation: Contact schools to schedule presentations of anti-bullying curriculum. Contact PTSAs and other parent groups to raise awareness/support of anti-bullying curriculum. Conduct presentations of anti-bullying curriculum to K-12 schools. Establish follow up/assessment with visited schools. RELATED SKILLS/INTERESTS: SPEAKING, PRESENTATION, FACILITATION, RESPONSIBILITY, WORKING WITH PEOPLE (2 Youth)
- Curriculum: Design inclusive, hands on, service learning based anti-bullying curriculum. Tailor, edit, and review curriculum as needed. Compile and maintain resource lists. Organize and compile community art projects. RELATED SKILLS/INTERESTS: RESEARCH, DESIGN, CREATIVE, ATTENTION-TO-DETAIL, WRITING (2 Youth)
- Networking/Tech: Maintain and update website with curriculum, resources, event calendar, photos, press, list of visited schools, archive of community art projects, and links to PSAs/social media campaigns. Maintain social media campaigns. Write, cast, and produce PSAs and short films. Occasionally film/photograph events. RELATED SKILLS/INTERESTS: SOCIAL MEDIA, COMPUTER, VIDEO CAMERA, STILL CAMERA, WEB DESIGN, EDITING, TECHNOLOGY, WRITING, ONLINE NETWORKING (2 Youth)
- Event Planning: Plan semi-annual LGBT Summit. Plan events for Days of Action, including the Day of Silence (parties, educational events, community service, etc). Plan 2 advocacy trips which involve lobbying in state capitol. Conduct event assessment. Run Events. Recruit volunteers. RELATED INTERESTS/SKILLS: ORGANIZATION, EVENT PLANNING, ACTIVISM, VOLUNTEERING, PERSONAL NETWORKING, EVENT PROMOTION, CREATIVE, RESEARCH (4 Youth)
